Only around 50 minutes drive from Athens, and about 35 minutes drive from the Eleftherios Venizelos airport, Sounio, and its surroundings have so much to offer! You might visit for 1-2 days while passing by Athens, and enjoy a swim, lunch, a sunset at the stunning Temple of Poseidon, or you may find your perfect holiday place and spend a few days to weeks without ever getting bored. Surrounding areas Thimari, Palea Fokea, and Lavrio are also beautiful places, where there are plenty of things to see and do with crystal clear waters, a special energy, and excellent food.

The Temple of Poseidon

The Temple of Poseidon is the perfect place to enjoy a dreamy sunset! The temple is designed according to Sacred Geometry and mystics say it is positioned exactly under four stars that are the “portals of the Universe.” It comes as no surprise its ambiance is mesmerizing, which is why visionaries such as Lord Byron, who carved his name on one of the temple’s doorposts, found so much inspiration here.

Scenic Beaches

Sounio is a popular summer destination mainly because of its lovely beaches, that are known for their clean waters, wonderful surrounding greenery and laid-back, tranquil vibe.
If you’re the type who prefers organised beaches (with sun-loungers and umbrellas for rent), there are plenty of fun beach bars all along the coast from Palea Fokea to Sounio. If you prefer beaches that aren't organized, Thimari has a few that we always enjoy! Just after Thimari, heading to Sounio, Katafigi beach is one you shouldn't miss! Further on is the scenic Legrena beach which has fluffy, lovely sand but is not the easiest to swim at as there are stone plates that can be slippery, and Harakas beach. Sounio also has a few lovely beaches, both organized and not. Quite popular are the beach at Assimakis Hotel and KAPE (with an accent on the ‘e‘), where you’ll find a pebble beach and a nudist beach.

Excellent Mediterranean Cuisine

There are numerous quality dining options of every variety – for romantic quiet couples, a rowdy gang of friends or a famished family. Some of our personal favorites include Antigoni and Apomero taverns (both in Thimari), Theodoros & Eleni Fish Tavern in Legrena, CH.MA restaurant and Ta Pefka tavern, both in Palea Fokea, and Marios Souvlaki in Anavyssos for souvlaki/gyros.

These were the top 3 reasons to visit Sounio and its surroundings. Of course there are many more, but we'll cover these in another blog post soon! Feel free to share your experience or ask a question in the comments.
